The Formalwear Improbability Quotient measures comic friction when a fashion object of high symbolic specificity is offered to a consumer whose body or environment makes the object difficult or unnecessary. Five components — symbolic density, morphological incompatibility, consumer plausibility, retail seriousness, and accessory-driven absurdity — are each scored from 0 to 2.

The FIQ has not yet been applied to bow ties, monocles, spats, or cummerbunds in marine environments; the Institute regards this as a regrettable but correctable gap. Reference implementation: Working Paper No. 48 (FIQ = 9.3/10 — nothing in the panel treats the transaction as absurd except the audience).
