Captionless Visual Surplus

AbbreviationCVS
First proposedWP48
StatusEstablished Institute principle

Captionless Visual Surplus names a mode in which an Inscrutables panel withholds a verbal punch line and allows composition, species choice, objects, and minimal signage to generate a self-sustaining excess of meaning. The image does not lack a caption; it outgrows one.

CVS marks a structural pole of the canon: its opposite — the verbose, overspilling narrative caption — is treated in Working Paper No. 49 as Narrative Caption Escalation (NCE). The reference implementation is Working Paper No. 48, in which the only words in the frame are a market sign reading TOP HATS, and the viewer is left facing not nonsense but inventory.
